Improving Haptic Rendering of Complex Scenes using Spatial Partitioning

چکیده
Most haptic APIs cannot efficiently render complex scenes. This paper presents two techniques that can reduce the time needed to haptically render a complex scene: a technique based on a spatial grid and a technique based on a modification of an octtree. These techniques are both theoretically and experimentally compared with each other and the default algorithm used in e-Touch. These results are discussed in order to draw conclusions on the best technique for a given scene.

Hybrid Rendering for Interactive Virtual Scenes
Interactive virtual environments used in conjunction with haptic displays are often staticviewpoint scenes that contain a mixture of static and dynamic virtual objects. The immersive realism of these environments is often limited by the graphical rendering system, typically OpenGL or Direct3D. In order to present more realistic scenes for haptic interaction without requiring additional modeling...
متن کاملBqR-Tree: A Data Structure for Flights and Walkthroughs in Urban Scenes with Mobile Elements
BqR-Tree, the data structure presented in this paper is an improved R-Tree data structure based on a quadtree spatial partitioning which improves the rendering speed of the usual R-trees when view-culling is implemented, especially in urban scenes. The city is split by means of a spatial quadtree partition and the block is adopted as the basic urban unit. One advantage of blocks is that they ca...
متن کاملInteraction in Distributed Virtual Environments
This course will describe the main challenges faced when building engaging shared virtual environments supporting complex behaviour and interaction, and provide discussions on techniques that can be adopted to support some of these. In order to build such environments, it is necessary to combine high quality graphics, better modes of interaction, rich behavioural simulations and appropriate dis...
متن کاملSix-Degree-of-Freedom Haptic Rendering Using Incremental and Localized Computations
We present a novel six-degree-of-freedom haptic rendering algorithm using incremental and localized contact computations. It uses an incremental approach for contact and force computations and takes advantage of spatial and temporal coherence between successive frames. As part of a preprocess, we decompose the surface of each polyhedron into convex pieces and construct bounding volume hierarchi...
متن کاملFast Rendering of Complex Environments Using a Spatial Hierarchy
We present a new method for accelerating the rendering of complex static scenes. The technique is applicable to unstructured scenes containing arbitrary geometric primitives and has sublinear asymptotic complexity. Our approach is to construct a spatial hierarchy of cells over the scene and to associate with each cell a simplified representation of its contents. The scene is then rendered using...
